alaadeen Alaadeen is the saxophone professor of Kansas City and the world.
Jovino Santos Neto Jovino Santos Neto is an amazing person to be around, playing music with him frees you up into new territories which are always grooving and surprising you. His compositions are in leagues of their own. He plays the heck out of the flute and melodica, too. Really, I can't describe this guy, you got to just go check him out for yourself.
Nate Shaw Nate Shaw is one of my closest musical brothers. He plays killer Hammond B-3, writes, arranges and all kinds of other stuff. He has traveled to Africa to study drums and has toured all over the place with many different bands. Not to mention, he's a very cool dude.
Marco Figueira Marco is great spirit and so much fun to play with. He is from Minas Gerais, Brazil, the same area that Milton Nascimento and Toninho Horta are from, so it's very fitting that he plays a lot of their music and also music of Djavan, Joao Bosco and lots of other great brazilian composers. We are playing together a lot and developing a musical raport on his gig at the Brazil Grill.
Brian Benninghove Tenor and soprano saxophonist Brian Benninghove knows how to make good music and have a good time doing it. I've never played a bad gig with this dude, he always makes it a fun time and it's always swingin'.
Sasha Dobson Sasha Dobson is a must hear vocalist. Her new album is very nice, some of my favorite songs of recently.
Nick Russo Trio Nick Russo is very musical guitarist and always fun to play with. On top of that, he's one of the most cordial and professional cats I've met in NYC. If there's anyone I know who's ALWAYS down to play, it's Nick.
Steve Doyle Steve Doyle gave me my first NYC gig at Arthur's. He plays great bass and piano and his harmonic skills are developed to a very high degree. We've played a lot together in different groups over the years and it's always a good time. Right now he's leading a fun band called "Men's Wearhouse". I can't describe it, except to say that you'll like the way his band sounds...... I GUARANTEE IT.
Itaiguara Brandao: bassist, composer aka: Dr. Fearless
true artist of the bass, he gives depth to the sound of the group and has an uplifting groove that just makes it fun to play with him. He writes great tunes, too. I call him "Dr. Fearless" because there have been times when he plays something so unbelievable I have to ask myself how he had the guts to even try it.
Michael Carvin The master drummer and teacher, Michael Carvin.
Todd Strait In 1989 I moved to Kansas City and the first drummer I heard was Todd Strait, my reaction... totally awestruck!! Such musicality, dynamics, touch, feel, consistency, professionalism... he has it all. I studied with him for three years and he became my mentor as a player and a person. I'm still knocked out when I see him, he has the most sensitive touch of ANY drummer I've ever seen, and he's just way cool behind the drums, never loses control or plays for himself, it's all music with Todd. Check him out!!
Adam Nussbaum Adam is one of the few guys that I've heard who can play really open, but yet always have it feel great and swinging. I studied with him briefly and we never even touched the drums, we just listened to recordings and rapped about Elvin, Mel Lewis, Art Blakey. He was one of two guys who took the time to listen to a recording of my playing and honestly tell me what he thought. He's got a great sense of humor and is fun to hang with, his records with John Abercrombie and Dan Wall are some of my favorites he is on. Check him out!
Carl Allen When I arrived in NYC I looked up Carl Allen, drummer with Freddie Hubbard for many years. I knew that Carl was the drummer on the Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw record "Double Take" and I had listened to that I lot, so I wanted to get with him. I studied with Carl for about six months and came away with a ton of conceptual information to process. Lessons with him weren't about books, but music; specifically the process of making music. What makes a drummer's ride beat distinctive? How can you be conversational on the drums? Things I will always think about and strive to get deeper into. Carl has been there with the best and you can hear it in his playing all the way.
Artt Frank: Be-Bop Legend Artt Frank is a one of a kind musician, person and soul. For many years Artt was Chet Baker's drummer of choice for his sensitivity, dynamics, swing, placement and heart. Artt is completely self taught and plays only what he hears, a refreshing change from today's school of blazing chops, loud combative so-called "Young Lion" school of music. Check him out, buy his book, too: "Essentials for the Be-Bop drummer" it's a great read and full of lots of info you don't get from schools!
dan wade dan wade's universe may exist somewhere between sock-chucks and emoticons, there's only one way to find out.
Chuck Haddix Chuck is my man in KC who is like a musical fountain of knowledge. His radio program "the Fish Fry" is one of the best programs you'll ever hear. He runs the Marr Sound Archives at UMKC. You can stream his show on Fri. and Sat. nites, or you can listen to 300 hours of archived Fish Fry shows. Man, I'm tellin' ya, check out his show, it's seriously good.
Dave Darlington Dave Darlington is a master of mixing and music. He won a grammy last year for his mixing on Wayne Shorter's album and is very in demand as you will see from his bio. He mixed my album and I was in awe watching this man work. Equally important as everything, he is a genuine person, very cool and always educational to work with.
D-Rome and Stick-N-Move Records D-Rome and i have been friends since we were in grade school and he has been a major influence in my musical tastes and experiences. Check him out, he's got some hot jams on his website.
Eliane Eliane is a swiss singer who I met at the new school some time ago. Since then she's got her own thing happening and I've been lucky to be on some of her gigs recently. She's a lot of fun to play with and her music covers a lot of bases.
Marianni Marianni is a lot of fun to play with, her band always has creative players involved and her music is a nice mix of brazilian/american sounds. If you live in NYC, drop by the Zinc bar on saturday nites to check her out, if you don't live in the city, buy her CD off her site.
